The Soul of the Himalayas
Perched at an altitude of nearly 10,000 feet, Tawang Monastery is not only the largest monastery in India but also the second largest in the world. Built in the 17th century by Merak Lama Lodre Gyatso, it stands as the spiritual heartbeat of Arunachal Pradesh, overlooking the Tawang Valley like a guardian of peace.
Its sprawling complex houses a three-story assembly hall adorned with vibrant murals depicting Buddhist legends, a sacred library filled with centuries-old scriptures, and a towering golden statue of Lord Buddha. The gentle rhythm of monks chanting in unison fills the air, creating an atmosphere that is both serene and deeply moving.
The monastery also serves as a cultural hub, hosting festivals such as Torgya, when the courtyard comes alive with masked dances, music, and vibrant rituals.
